Hi Liz! To properly center your pic, you just need to create a box that is 180 pixels wide by 180 pixels high. Then drop your photo into that and save. If you need assistance please send it to me at mindy@bodyproud.org :-) Love your profile!

Profile Information

My Plug:
I teach yoga around my other work.
My BodyPROUD Story
I am interested in social justice and have done a lot to work to empower women, stop domestic violence, and bring wellness into people's lives.
My Facts 'n Stats:
Liz

My bodyPROUD Goals:
I've had pictures appear in a few fitness magazines and articles on wellness that I've written be published.
My AHA Life Defining Moments:
(written in 2005, continued..)

When we were finally able to go home, I was
determined to make a greater
commitment to health and fitness in my life.
Because I have always loved to
dance, and wanted to start dancing again, I had
planned on competing in a
fitness competition once I got in shape. Once I was
able, I began to focus
on that goal. I have spent the past two and a half
months working very
hard, keeping focused more and more on my training
and nutrition, and
learning everything I can about what I need to
accomplish to be successful
at a fitness competition. I have made great strides
in this year, many of
which have come forth over the past few months. I
have become a stronger
person both physically and spiritually.

I will be competing in the Gopher State Classic in
Plymouth, Minnesota on
April 2 as my first competition of my life. This
day is not only my fitness
competition; it is Jordan's 15th birthday as well. I
will be dedicating my
performance to him, in gratitude for his amazing
recovery, and to all the
people who got me through the most difficult time in
our lives. I cannot
think of a better reason to celebrate health and
fitness!
My Transformation Triumphs!
But THAT is my OLD story. My son graduated from high school and went on to college this year. Although he suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, he is very fortunate to be alive, to be functioning, and to have been able to go back to school and live a reasonably normal life. He is doing GREAT. I don't want that to be my story anymore, but it is a part of me.

After I competed in 2005, I stayed in great shape for a while, but allowed myself to step away from it. I had been putting myself through school, working full-time, and raising a teenager by myself and I did what happens to many people... I got sloppy with my training, allowed myself too many indulgences, and this past year found myself at a weight I was horrified by and just not being my best.

So, after my current "transformation" that I am working on my goal is NO MORE BEFORE PICTURES. My goal is to maintain the best shape of my life.

This is really a transformational time in my life, both physically and spiritually. I spent 18 years raising a child, working full-time and going to school. Now that my son graduated and is an adult, and I completed my masters degree- it is time to be open to the wonderful possibilities of the Universe. Up until recently I was the Execuitve Director of a domestic abuse and sexual assault shelter and advocacy organization and I am looking for my next step in life. I want to continue to work for social justice and incorporate wellness into my work. I continue to teach yoga and am also considering getting my Certified Personal Trainer credentials. Fitness and yoga help keep me centered while doing some very high-stress work in the non-profit world and I believe keeping a focus on wellness keeps me balanced, while helping me serve those in need even better. I also feel that we need to bring more of a mentoring and wellness approach into serving people: survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault, teen parents, homeless, etc.

Life Advice that Helped Me:
Keep rising up- life is a journey, we will never reach perfection, but if we focus on the gifts that we bring, on the potential of all beings, and remain open to the possibilities- we will find greatness.
How I Boosted my Confidence and/or Added Joy and/or Health into my Life:
Mentoring is a very big focus in my work and life philosophy. Think of someone you know who is struggling in any area (fitness, abuse, addicition)- think of the gifts that you have- share those gifts. I mentored teen parents for many years and stay in touch with many of the families that I mentored.

What a Difference a Year Can Make

Two thousand and four was a very difficult year for
me. I began the year
having orthoscopic knee surgery, which took longer
to heal from than I
expected. After the surgery, due to my inability to
go to the gym and not
feeling well for quite a while following the
procedure, I proceeded to gain
almost twenty pounds. I was the heaviest I have
ever been (I weighed more
than I did when I was nine months pregnant).

In April I cut off almost a foot of hair and donated
it to Locks of Love,
which was not a bad thing, however it was a huge
adjustment for me after
having long hair for most of my life. In May, I
ended a long time
relationship in which I was not happy. Again, not a
bad thing, but a major
adjustment. Then in June of 2004, the company I had
worked at for four
years was downsized and I lost my once-secure job.
In August, my beloved
seven-year-old cat, Mat, suddenly suffered from
kidney failure and died. I
thought that was more than I could handle.

Then the unthinkable happened. On September 5, I
was leaving the gym on my
way to meet some of my girlfriends for a night out,
since my son Jordan was
visiting with his father for the Labor Day weekend.
As I left the gym, I
received a message on my cell phone. It was
Jordan’s aunt telling me that
my fourteen-year-old son was in a terrible
motorcycle accident and was being
flown to Gillette Children's Hospital in a coma.
Jordan had been riding on
the back of his dad’s motorcycle, when they slowed
down to turn into a
driveway to go to a family cookout, they were run
over by an SUV. Jordan
was dragged 205 feet under the truck before the
driver stopped. The vehicle
caught on fire, but Jordan was pulled from beneath
before the flames reached
him. He was in a coma for eleven days and in the
rehab department until
October 8. I stayed with him twenty-four hours a
day while he was at the
hospital because he needed me there and I did not
want to leave his side.

The good news is that he is recovering wonderfully
and is back at school
now. During our stay at the hospital, I needed to
try to keep myself
healthy so I could be there for Jordan. While I was
by his side, holding
his hand and talking to him while he was in a coma,
I needed to keep myself
focused on something positive throughout the most
difficult time in our
lives. There wasn't a gym to use at the hospital,
but I modified my
exercise program to things I could do while I was
there (including using
hand weights in the physical therapy room while
Jordan was doing his PT,
running in the parking ramp, yoga and tai chi) and I
had a friend bring me
my protein shakes and bars so I had some healthy
food with me to avoid
eating all of the junk food our well-meaning
visitors brought to the
hospital.
My Dietary &/or Training Routine:
I want to connect with others who are fitness and wellness minded.

Many more to come!!

Wow Liz. What a great profile!

It sounds like you would be awesome for our new Muscles Making a Difference Everywhere campaign, and we encourage you to get in touch with Julie Woods to discuss further. The fact that you have so much interest - and background - in bringing a wellness approach into serving people is fantastic!! :-)

As well there is a new Brain Fitness group which you should join and share some insight from your son's journey to health.

We're sure you'll be a great source of inspiration and motivation for a lot of the Body Proud Community members. We'd love to see you around here more often. :)

Are you competing in the 2010 FAME World Tour?
