You are so ambitious. I admire a woman who is educated and successful. I can just imagine how difficult it must be to earn a Ph.D. You must really enjoy teaching. Speaking of degrees, I need to go back to school to finish my studies. I left school…

I don't actually add additional protein to my muffins. I have heard that heating protein at high temperatures does reduce its effectiveness. I just use egg whites (Egg beaters do not fluff up as nice in baked goods). Here is a recipe for Lemon…

Profile Information

My Plug:
Collegiate psychology instructor, staff therapist, doctoral student. Currently taking time off from work to complete my dissertation.
My BodyPROUD Story
I was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan by my parents who are now retired educators. I have a twin brother who also resides in Michigan. I attended Kentucky State University and Prairie View A&M University, where I received dual bachelor’s degrees with Summa Cum Laude honors in English and Psychology, and master’s degrees in Juvenile Forensic Psychology. I am currently completing my PhD in Clinical Psychology with my dissertation focusing on the need for standardization in psychological testing for individuals undergoing bariatric procedures. I went to school on athletic and academic scholarships where I ran cross country and track and field; specializing in the long jump, triple jump, and hurdles. I have worked as a high school English teacher, a collegiate psychology instructor, and as a mental health clinician in juvenile probation, the public school system, and most recently in a community mental health setting. I am currently taking time off from work to complete my dissertation.

I relocated to Bakersfield, California in July 2007 to complete a year-long doctoral internship with Kern County Mental Health’s psychology internship program. It was during this time that my interest in health psychology; specifically psychological assessment and bariatric procedures; increased due to the number of people I met who had undergone the procedure with poor psychological screening and significant post-operative psychological difficulties. This has motivated me to examine the need for psychological testing standardization for persons desiring the procedure. I assert that it is possible to be healthy, work full-time and go to school full-time. I hope to inspire others who feel burdened by life’s time constraints and teach them that just like you make a conscious effort to be unhealthy; you can make the same conscious effort to be healthy. It just requires educating yourself. I abide by the “pay now or pay later” philosophy of health. “You can pay now by investing time to readjust your lifestyle or you can pay later in health related medical costs and insurance premiums. The choice is yours, but either way you have to pay.” I hope to encourage students, athletes, and people of all ages that a healthy lifestyle can be fun, once you learn what you enjoy.

In addition to going to school and working, I started competing in figure competitions in 2004 the same year I began working on my PhD. After joining a gym in Houston, TX, seeing the physiques shaped by trainer Jolene Carter, and stepping on stage for the first time, I became an avid competitor. In the 4 years I have competed, I have participated in 21 figure competitions both nationally and internationally. I have competed in almost every organization and have won 11 of my 21 shows. My proudest accomplishment is that I am a life-long drug free athlete who was recently sponsored by All American EFX. I have been featured in Oxygen Magazine’s Future of Fitness Section and have had articles featured in Fitness & Physique Magazine, Natural Muscle, and most recently Flex & Pump international magazine. My interests include spending time with family and friends, shopping, scrapbooking, reading, writing, indoor rock climbing, dancing, photography, traveling, and attending weekly Bible study classes. I aspire to work with individuals dealing with eating disorders and body image issues. I also aspire to obtain a certification in dietetics and do nutritional consulting work. Additionally, I hope to inspire others and dispel the myth that a healthy lifestyle is only attainable if you have an abundance of time. “In life, you make time for what you want. Have faith and trust that God will give you peace and contentment in all situations to accept the life He has created for you.”

How I Boosted my Confidence and/or Added Joy and/or Health into my Life:
I live by my life philosophy: “You’ve been given the gift of life. Rejoice in the good, learn from the bad, and love every moment of it because you only have one.”
Please Help ME with:
Growing up in a family of athletes and coaches, I was always aware of the hard work and dedication of sports performance. I was a high school multi sport standout and a track and field and cross country standout. Following college I began teaching high school and eventually made my way to coaching track and cross country in ’03. I maintained an adequate level of fitness, but not the same level at which a former collegiate athlete becomes accustomed. In May ’04, after deciding to rejoin a gym, my membership included 5 free training sessions that I initially declined. After seeing the physiques produced by trainer Jolene Carter, I agreed to sign up to train and compete in my first figure competition. I’ll never forget Jolene’s words at our initial session:

“Are you going to listen to me?”
“Yes.”
“Are you going to do everything that I tell you to do?”
“Yes.”
“Good, then you’ll win your show.”

The training regimen and work ethics were not new, but the diet was. I always ate very healthy, but never realized how “unhealthy” my “healthy” eating habits were. I began my transformation at 148lbs and about 21% body fat. I ate 6 clean meals daily incorporating 1 hr weights, 1 hr cardio 5 days/wk, and a lot plyometrics and track workouts. The changes in my physique were immediate and amazingly gratifying. I felt good, looked awesome, and the diet was great. Contrary to the beliefs of many, a proper diet does not have to be boring. About a month into my training I remember thinking, “I could eat like this forever.” The key is to find foods you enjoy and learn to prepare them healthy to where they work for you. You can’t eat what others say is good, if you do not like it because you won’t stick to it. Of course there are the staple foods, but creativity is crucial to enjoying and maintaining the meal plan. During my competition diet, I eat chicken and shrimp fried rice, southern style potatoes, steak fries, crab cakes, chicken fajitas and twice baked potatoes (just to name a few dishes.) And those certainly aren’t bland tasting meals. 16 weeks after my journey began I was 128lbs, 6% body fat, and the winner of my first figure competition, which happened to be one of the biggest shows in Houston, TX: The John Sherman Classic. I guess Jolene was right!! I have been competing ever since. Of course there were times when I rebounded and gained more than I would have liked post-competition. Needless to say, I have since learned how to successfully maintain, adjust, and manipulate my body type through proper diet and exercise. The secret? There is none. There is no magic pill. There is no quick fix. There is only hard work, dedication, and education. You have to LEARN how to eat and work in accordance to what you enjoy if you want to maintain it.

I began my fitness journey in 2004 at the same time I began working on my Ph.D. in clinical psychology. I have since decided to purse providing therapy for individuals battling eating disorders and body image disorders. Eventually, I would like to provide psychological assessments and ongoing therapy for individuals desiring gastric bypass and lapband surgery, as food is rarely the primary issue, rather, the outward consequence of underlying issues. I truly believe a positive self-image is key to living a healthy lifestyle. Currently, society places too much emphasis on quick fix solutions that only temporarily mask problems rather than offering permanent solutions. Of course the permanent solutions often take longer and require more effort, but the feeling of self-achievement and success is more meaningful when individuals are able to work at resolving their own problems rather than allowing others to do it for them. In time, it is my hope to provide others with opportunities for self-discovery, problem resolution, and a positive self-image through therapeutic efforts leading to increased healthy lifestyles through proper nutrition and increased self-efficacy.
My Dietary &/or Training Routine:
To hopefully inspire other athletes of all ages, ethnicities, and genders. To network and establish social support for with others in the health and fitness industry.
Expressing Gratitude is a Key Ingredient to a Happy Life. I Am Grateful for:
My proudest fitness accomplishments are winning the title of Ms. INBA Figure Olympia '08 and that I am a life-long drug free athlete who was recently sponsored by All American EFX.

I learned about bodyPROUD.org from:
I competed as a pro in the FAME world Championships back in 2005. The show did not end until almost 2am and the judging was very biasedf toward the canadians. I was very disappointed after that experience and chose not to participate with the organization any longer. At the request of many other competitors I have been told that things have changed and am willing to give the FAME organization another opportunity. I hope I will not be dissapointed. Thank you.

You are so ambitious. I admire a woman who is educated and successful. I can just imagine how difficult it must be to earn a Ph.D. You must really enjoy teaching. Speaking of degrees, I need to go back to school to finish my studies. I left school in 2001 to take a job in Dallas and ever since then, there has been one delay after another and this global depression is not making things any easier. I am a double major and I plan to return to the University of Houston sometime next year.
I have been all over California. I was a cross country truck driver years ago and I visited California every month. It is a nice place to visit, but I would not want to live there.
Enjoy your week, and study hard. I enjoy hearing from you.
