Profile Information

My Plug:
Clinical Dietitian working in a Diabetes Management Centre, helping people diagnosed with Diabetes manage their disease through ongoing assessment ,education and lifestyle changes.
My BodyPROUD Story
Competitive synchronized swimming and training with swim teams led to my first job as a lifeguard/swim instructor. After marrying and while raising two boys (now 20 and 22 years old) I delved into running, biking and combined that with swimming to compete in triathlon. Started bodybuilding two years ago.
My Facts 'n Stats:
Elaine Mattatall, age 50. Lifelong athlete starting as a competitive synchronized swimmer, Born/brought up in Dartmouth. Graduated university in 1980, completed a dietetic internship and have worked ina variety of settings as a dietitian and registered sport nutritionist.
My bodyPROUD Goals:
Past athletic highlights include competing at the World Masters Aquatic games in 1994 in Montreal and placing top 10 as well as setting a Canadian Record in the 800m freestyle. Competing at the World Triathlon Championships in Cleveland in was also fun. Together with my training buddies, we have been featured in local media, and I had an article written highlighting my return from the Canadian Masters Swim Cahampionships with a first place.
My AHA Life Defining Moments:
Competing is the icing on the cake...the perfect way to cap months of hard training and also a way to set specific goals. I am motivated to keep going simply because I can. It is just an absolute blast to see muscle development on my body at my age, and I know I can still get better! Competing is not about winning, it's a chance to celebrate being the best that you can be.
My Transformation Triumphs!
Most recently I competed at the Canadian Masters Swim Championships in May 2008, Quebec City. I won the 400IM, placing first in my age group. I also placed 2nd and 3rd in other races. I would not have accomplished this without the ongoing support and encouragement of my husband David, and good friends Nancy and Marguerite who were there to cheer me on and support me the entire time, in and out of the pool!
To Become BodyPROUD, I commit to do the Following:
With age come changes we can't control, and yet a lot we can. My goal is to embrace the changes that age brings and continually test my body's limits and my conviction to a healthy lifestyle.
Life Advice that Helped Me:
Surround yourself with positive, supportive , likeminded people both in and out of the gym. Keep a balance of family/work and training. Recognize, acknowledge and thank the people who help you on a daily basis.
How I Boosted my Confidence and/or Added Joy and/or Health into my Life:
Embrace your age, accept what cannot be changed, don't settle for average. Biggest lesson: don't starve the body...feed and nourish, train hard and remember how important muscle recovery is for Masters athletes.
Please Help ME with:
I have been a lifelong athlete in other sports, but bodybuilding is a whole new challenge. Most of my swimming, running and biking buddies think I am crazy to pursue this, some say they think it's great, but only my training buddies from the gym really understand that desire to push the limits, change your body and embrace what changes age brings and still improve. I am continually reminded by my work at the Diabetes Management Centre that I am lucky to have my health and the desire to work hard to keep it. I see people every day at work who suffer from the results of an unhealthy lifestyle and who, at age 50, seem "old". It motivates me to keep training as long as I can.
My Dietary &/or Training Routine:
Body Proud celebrates the best in all of us. The philosophy is one of encouragement and celebration.
Expressing Gratitude is a Key Ingredient to a Happy Life. I Am Grateful for:
Recently, winning a Canadian Champion first place at the Canadian Masters Swimming Championships, May 2008, Quebec City.
My Hero / Role Model / Trainer / Sponsor / Coach / Guru... and Why
