I just posted pictures of my first attempt at posing. Made me realize just how hard it is and how easy the pros make it look, but I've got to start somewhere. I guess they're not bad, especially for…Continue

My Plug:
I love being a self-employed personal trainer with a gym in my home in Conifer, Colorado, a mountain town southwest of Denver. The whole lower level in my house is a gym with lots of big windows looking out onto the beauty and wildlife. You never know what you’ll see when you’re working out at Miller’s Fitness, including everything from squirrels and chipmunks, to foxes, coyotes, and raccoons, to deer and elk, and even black bears and bobcats, which I put photos of on my website. Our neighbors have spotted three mountain lions that hang out together and we’ve seen their tracks in the snow, but haven’t seen them, yet! My gym has everything to get my clients in great shape, for less than you’ll pay at a health club.
My BodyPROUD Story
I’m proud to say that I’ll be turning 50 years old on July 4, 2010 and I’ve been in great shape all my life! My story of health and fitness begins with picking my parents well! I inherited some good genetics, and lucked out by getting parents that they made sure I ate nutritious meals every day when I was growing up. We rarely ever ate at a restaurant and we never had soda in the house. I’m not sure I appreciated it at the time, but now I sure do. In addition, the fact that we walked everywhere as kids is another thing that had a huge impact on my body, then and now. This was in Indiana back in the sixties and my mom didn’t know how to drive, so in order to get anywhere, we took the bus and we walked. I also walked a lot with my dad because he was recovering from two heart attacks and open heart surgery, and back then the rehab was to walk as much as possible. And, of course, I walked to school and home every day, in bad weather, uphill both ways! So now I’m reaping a lot of the benefits from having had such a healthy start in life.

Fast forward to 1978, at age 18 when I moved from Indiana to Colorado and then to 1985 when I graduated from the University of Colorado (I was on the 7-year program!) with a Business Degree, passed the CPA exam and got a job with a CPA firm in Denver. I did the long commute and long hours and had a nice salary, benefits, 401(k), and became a partner in the firm until 1998 when I got freakishly sick. As crazy as it sounds, I woke up one morning without any spinal fluid. Somehow, I mysteriously got a spinal fluid leak. I spent the next several months flat on my back, while my leak healed. It was a year before I could exercise after that and I had to start very slowly. Ironically, when I was at the weakest point in my life physically, is when I decided to start studying for a new career in strength training. In 2001 I quit my job as CPA, started my new passion as a CPT, certified personal trainer, and never looked back.

Then there’s Jack! He’s my husband, best friend, soul mate, coach and personal trainer. I know with him by my side, I’ll be successful in my new quest of fitness modeling. In 2010 I’m looking forward to new challenges, including honoring the body I’ve been blessed with by participating in the Body Proud events.
My Facts 'n Stats:
I was born on the 4th of July, 1960, I'm 5'2" and weigh 105 pounds. My measurements are 35-24-35 and my starting body fat is around 20%. Married, no children.
My bodyPROUD Goals:
My Body Proud Journey starts with the on-line championship on March 15, 2010 and I hope it’s just the beginning of a very long journey.
My AHA Life Defining Moments:
I have some pretty deep-rooted beliefs about my body that I’m trying to work around. My dad and mom, bless theirs hearts, were born in 1918 and 1920, so they had some very “traditional” beliefs about the human body and I was raised to not draw any attention to myself, never really showing skin or dressing in a revealing manner. When I left home at 18, though, all bets were off. I loved wearing skimpy clothes and bikinis and I felt good about my body, but I still basically remained that shy girl at heart. I started strength training at the age of 30 and noticed results almost immediately. A couple other female lifters took me under the wings and taught me a lot, so I was really looking good, and felt inspired and confident. Now at age 49+, I have a different relationship with my body. I’m amazed by it and all the things it does for me. My skin has lost some youthfulness, and there’s more wrinkles around my eyes, but there’s also more wisdom. I’m dressing more conservatively, except on those special occasions when I can break out the LBD, but I don’t want to look like the pathetic middle-aged woman who is still dressing like a frisky 20 year-old. It’s just not appropriate anymore, so even though I’m proud of my body, I rarely get to show it off and when I do, I’m a little uncomfortable. I’m hoping the Body Proud events will help me feel comfortable in my skin again.
My Transformation Triumphs!
Being hired recently as a fitness writer for LIVESTRONG.com, Lance Armstrong’s web site was my most recent claim to fame. What an honor to get to reach thousands of people with the true message of health and fitness. On top of that, my writing is associated with one of the most awesome athletes ever, so I’m very proud of that.
My bodyPROUD Intentions:
Improve my Health, Increase My Strength, Keep Me Young, Compete in Physique Showcase Events, Sculpt My Physique, Feel Good in a Bathing Suit, Be an Inspiration to Others, Get Discovered - TV, Magazines, Sponsorship, Gain Exposure
To Become BodyPROUD, I commit to do the Following:
March 15, 2010 is the on-line challenge, so I have just over 2 months to accomplish my goal of reducing my body fat by at least 1%, cutting my waist by 1/2 inch, firming the butt, upper thighs and triceps.
Life Advice that Helped Me:
My advise to you to help you reach your goals is to always honor your body. We’re so quick to criticize our every flaw, or beat ourselves up harshly. I can’t say it any better than Body Proud already has:
LOVE YOUR BODY!
Your Body is an Incredible Machine.
Treat it as Your Most Cherished Possession.
Only then will you Discover its True Potential.
LIVE BODY PROUD!
How I Boosted my Confidence and/or Added Joy and/or Health into my Life:
My philosophy on focused thinking is that when you can learn how to focus your mind, which I admit is so much easier said than done, you can accomplish anything. Focusing your mind requires quiet time to clear your mind of everything else, then opening it up to all the possibilities you can imagine, thinking outside the box, with all your options available, and deciding which course of action feels right and true for you. Then start taking baby steps in that direction, realizing that adjustments will need to be made along the way, and obstacles will be incurred. When that happens, refocus your mind and stay on course.
Please Help ME with:
I am looking for advice on pretty much everything! Having never even seen a competition I really have no idea what I’m getting into. I’ve got the training and nutrition part covered, but the pre-competition stuff like tanning and hair, and how to choose your outfit, and how to walk in those shoes, and how to pose, and how to flex and smile at the same time! I’m starting with the on-line competition, rather than a live competition, so hopefully that will help ease me into the process. When I submit my photos, should they be professionally done, or can I just take them myself? And the video? I’ll be doing a lot of learning in the next couple months!
My Dietary &/or Training Routine:
My dietary and training routine is all a work-in-process. I don’t do well with strict regimens and prefer some flexibility so I decide each day what my body needs for fuel and base my workout on the energy level I’m experiencing that day. The better I eat, the better my energy. A typical day of eating includes a breakfast of oatmeal with nuts, blueberries and flaxseed. A few hours later, I grab a protein bar or shake. Lunch is a turkey sandwich on a sandwich thin with some healthy mayo, cheese and avocado. Mid-afternoon I’ll have some fruit and cottage cheese or yogurt. Dinner is a big salad, with chicken or tuna, hard boiled eggs, some walnuts, broccoli sprouts, and either tomatoes or fruit, like mandarin oranges, and always home-made salad dressing.

My training routine is up to my husband, Jack. He knows what my body needs and always has my best interest at heart, which makes him the perfect trainer for me. Variety is the main feature of my workouts because I get bored easily. I train myself (and my clients) at a couple different places. Sometimes I work out at the local Anytime Fitness, but I usually prefer working out in my own home gym. I like the privacy and not having all the distractions of being in a gym where I know everyone. I can focus and concentrate better when I’m alone. I have an awesome treadmill and stair machine that I hate, but it rewards me with tighter buns! My strength training routine is always changing, switching between machines, dumbbells, and my new favorite, TRX Suspension Training.
Expressing Gratitude is a Key Ingredient to a Happy Life. I Am Grateful for:
I am grateful for my husband, Jack, and my mom, Lydia. They are two true symbols of strength to me, both Capricorns and both very goat-like, in a good way, usually! I’m grateful for my cat, Grady, who makes me smile every day and who teaches me with his zen-like presence. I’m grateful for a healthy, strong body and mind. I’m grateful for a warm home on this snowy, cold day in Colorado.
My Hero / Role Model / Trainer / Sponsor / Coach / Guru... and Why
A few more words about Jack, my husband, hero and coach. We met in 1991 at the Highline Athletic Club in Littleton, Colorado. He was sweating on the stair machine and I was pumping iron in the weight room. Luckily the drinking fountain was right next to the stair machine and I was always so thirsty when he was around! Almost five years later we eloped, running off to the beaches of Negril, Jamaica, getting married in our bare feet! His strength, both physical and mental, inspire me to reach for new heights.
