Hi Bodyproud,
I have have had the fortune of working on both sides of the camera. Years ago I used to be a professional model working for Sutherland Models here in Toronto. I have also also art directed photoshoots as that was my primary income and now I'm behind the camera taking the pictures. The responsibility for taking great pics falls on everyone involved. Model and photographer. If everyone at the shoot feels responsible for the shoots outcome, everyone will do their very best to make it happen. The photos will speak for themselves.
Modelling experience has little to do with how the photos will turn out. Some models have no experience but they shine in front of the camera with energy and creativity. Just like some artists become a number one hit with their first album. They are simply put, naturals. Most models will have to work at it. Its not how long you work at it either, its how hard you work at it! Studying other models poses is important because you never know who your shooting with. For example, when I modelled I was shot by some highly respected photographers. Some guide you through every step of a shoot – as is often the case with advertising shoots. Others, give you almost no feedback whatsoever as they may be used to working with elite models. In which case you as a model are responsible for adding your own spice. When I started modelling I was dependant on the photographer for coaching and had to brush up my skill set to keep working. My "Blue Steel" was getting old fast LOL!
Photographers are a whole different ball game. There are a ton of people with fancy cameras that call themselves photographers and that may be misleading. Each year it gets tougher to find the right photographer as more and more cameras are sold. When I worked as a model, my agency set up all of my shoots for me. It was a no brainer as the agency had preferred photographers for promo shoots and the clients who hired me were Ad agencies who had preferred photographers. I just showed up and there was a seasoned pro there ready to shoot me – not necessarily coach me. As with most models in the fitness industry, if your not represented you will have to find a photographer yourself.
Some photographers have a good eye, some only have a good camera. I would suggest looking at the content of the shot to help your decision. Is it interesting, does it show the models best features, does it have its own energy etc? Try not to be lured by fancy cameras or volume of models shot. Ten years experience doesn't mean your better than the new kid on the block with three years experience. Talent is talent. The big decision will always be a subjective call as we all have slightly different likes and dislikes. The model has to pick someone who just feels right to them. Find someone who's skill set will complement yours to offer as much or as little coaching as you need. FInd someone who can make you say "WOW thats hot!" when you see your pics. Then put them on your speed dial ;-)
Cheers,
M
