I've been modeling for a variety of photographer's and diff type shoots and I have learned one thing above all. It is a total waste of time to shoot with someone just because they are the most available. Even though you learn something good, the shroter route is to be critical in the sense of does this person have what we both need for what we are after. So, both models and photographers should actually see a need in the other. That's when the greatest pics are taken. :)

Agree? I was dead tired and ready to crash when this was taken but by the end of a long great shoot I got off on how much he loved what he was doing and i could just "turn it on like a second wind in a workout".

Heeey Elaine you've shared some interesting concepts about the kind of energy that works between model and photographer. As a motivational Speaker/Body Builder I'd say upholding the relationship regardless of the venture is always important. So YES you are absolutely right. I'm not a professional photographer although I've been shooting for my own artistic interest since I was 12 and minored as a central area of focus in photography in college. One thing I can tell you since I've used my photography as the foundation for my Award-Winning Paintings and Drawings is that the chemistry between photographer and model is to me just as important as the kind of camera you use and the lighting. So I'm very impressed with your article here and what you shed light on in this writing. You are a wise woman and I look forward to meeting you. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for your words of wisdom. Do you have any suggestions on how to find that kind of photographer? I don't want to do lingerie pictures because I don't feel comfortable doing that. But bathing suits, fitness wear that's okay. I am just at a loss as to how to begin to look for the right photographer.
While this is a very true statement, there may be more to discuss.

To me there is a great way to explain why one should be looking for more than just any photos shoot and more than just a large voume of images.

All photographers even the greatest benefit from working with the very best experienced models as they learn something new from each and every one. All models even the most experienced will benefit form the great photographers as they will learn something new and valuable with each. When the two work together they are likley to assured of a much much higher percentage of awesome and usable photos.

Alternaively.

Neither party learns anything of value with an inexperienced partner to shoot with and they must be crazy to think that it might be a worthwhile experience. They may luck out and get a good photos but it is unlikely they will create a great one. They may even teach each other what might be bad or unproductive habits they may sruggle to overcome later on.

Just like any field of endeavor those who succeed are those that go to school and learn from the knowledgeable teachers in that field.

Always new photographers should be hiring the best models they can in order to step up there game and advance to higher levels, and the same is true for new models. They should both be seeking the highest quality, the best learning experience and not just a large quantity of images that may actually hurt thier career as they demonstrate the lack of skills rather than skills acquired.

The bottom line for both sides of the fence is that you are not worth being paid unless you bring well honed skills to the shoot no matter what your other assets may be.
Elaine, THANK YOU girl and great pictures and great discussion!
I have not been active on here in quite some time. Those of you that know me, HELLO and hope all is well. Those that do not, I am back and would love to meet you. I have been in this industry for a very long time. I too still have questions and I am always willing to help or guide a new person, even if I have a personal conflict with them. I do not think and I don't judge anyone by someone elses words. I judge you on my own and I would love for this industry to simply help each other out to get where they need to and dream to. WORLD PEACE~ HA, I am very comfortable in my own skin and I know who I am and where I come from. If you go to my profile or do some research you will see my background. Woman have to be cautious. If you do not know anyone that has shot with a photographer that you are being approached by or you are approaching to schedule a shoot. Ladies, research please. If you still want to shoot with whomever, first time, take someone with you. Make sure that in communicating with the photographer, you find out all details of the shoot. Ask them if you have to sign a release and if you are able to use these pictures for your own personal use? Make sure they know you will be accompanied by a bodyguard, there should not/will not be a problem with that, and one last thing from me, know what direction you are going into. You cannot change your mind once you have shot a certain way, thong, no thong ect. so have no regrets. Do not be someone you are not simply because they were published. Determination and knowing who you are will land that dream! I could write a book on this :) Sorry, I talk alot! Can't wait to catch up with everyone! DREAM BIG, Xo ~Eydie

Hi Bodyproud,

I have have had the fortune of working on both sides of the camera. Years ago I used to be a professional model working for Sutherland Models here in Toronto. I have also also art directed photoshoots as that was my primary income and now I'm behind the camera taking the pictures. The responsibility for taking great pics falls on everyone involved. Model and photographer. If everyone at the shoot feels responsible for the shoots outcome, everyone will do their very best to make it happen. The photos will speak for themselves.

Modelling experience has little to do with how the photos will turn out. Some models have no experience but they shine in front of the camera with energy and creativity. Just like some artists become a number one hit with their first album. They are simply put, naturals. Most models will have to work at it. Its not how long you work at it either, its how hard you work at it! Studying other models poses is important because you never know who your shooting with. For example, when I modelled I was shot by some highly respected photographers. Some guide you through every step of a shoot – as is often the case with advertising shoots. Others, give you almost no feedback whatsoever as they may be used to working with elite models. In which case you as a model are responsible for adding your own spice. When I started modelling I was dependant on the photographer for coaching and had to brush up my skill set to keep working. My "Blue Steel" was getting old fast LOL!

Photographers are a whole different ball game. There are a ton of people with fancy cameras that call themselves photographers and that may be misleading. Each year it gets tougher to find the right photographer as more and more cameras are sold. When I worked as a model, my agency set up all of my shoots for me. It was a no brainer as the agency had preferred photographers for promo shoots and the clients who hired me were Ad agencies who had preferred photographers. I just showed up and there was a seasoned pro there ready to shoot me – not necessarily coach me. As with most models in the fitness industry, if your not represented you will have to find a photographer yourself.

Some photographers have a good eye, some only have a good camera. I would suggest looking at the content of the shot to help your decision. Is it interesting, does it show the  models best features, does it have its own energy etc? Try not to be lured by fancy cameras or volume of models shot. Ten years experience doesn't mean your better than the new kid on the block with three years experience. Talent is talent. The big decision will always be a subjective call as we all have slightly different likes and dislikes. The model has to pick someone who just feels right to them. Find someone who's skill set will complement yours to offer as much or as little coaching as you need. FInd someone who can make you say "WOW thats hot!" when you see your pics. Then put them on your speed dial ;-)

Cheers,

M
